Airport Line is a new planned rail connection running from Pasila via Helsinki Airport to the southern side of Kerava, to Jäspilä. The line will connect to both the main line heading north and the Lahti direct line. In total, Airport Line will be approximately 25 kilometers long, of which the majority—around 24 kilometers—will be in a tunnel.

- We are very pleased that the client has selected us for the third time as a design partner for the Airport Line project. This long-term collaboration reflects trust in our work and in our ability to advance a demanding project step by step, combining all our expertise from complex infrastructure design to highly specialized building engineering. It is great to continue working on this significant project together with the client and other stakeholders, says Jannis Mikkola, acting Deputy CEO and EVP Technical consulting.

The project will enable direct long-distance train connections to the airport as well as faster commuter train services. In addition, Airport Line will increase rail capacity on the busy Pasila–Kerava section and improve the reliability of train operations.

- We received three strong bids, and we are very pleased that the assignment attracted interest from high-quality providers. With Sitowise and Ramboll, we will continue a good collaboration, as both companies have been involved in the project’s earlier design phases, says Siru Koski, Project Director of Airport Line.

During the track plan phase, the technical solutions and implementation of the railway will be further refined. This is a statutory project phase under the Railways Act, in which it is defined in detail how the railway project will be carried out in practice so that construction can begin and the necessary legal decisions can be made. The work will proceed under the leadership of Annika Salokangas, Head of Regions and Transport Infrastructure at Sitowise.

- Our design organization is excited to move into the track plan phase, which is necessary to enable investment decisions on construction. Airport Line is not only an infrastructure project—in practice, it can be compared to designing a massive building constructed underground, says Salokangas.

Extensive experience in the Airport Line project

The collaboration between Sitowise and Ramboll in the Airport Line project continues smoothly, as the companies have jointly been responsible for the earlier design phases.

Sitowise was responsible for preparing the general plan for Airport Line, with Ramboll acting as a subconsultant. The general plan was completed in January 2026 and defined the approximate location and space requirements of the railway, as well as its relationship with surrounding land use. It also presented the basic technical and operational solutions for the line and the principles for mitigating environmental impacts. Prior to this, the project’s preliminary study and environmental impact assessment were completed.

- We have had strong collaboration with Sitowise already in the earlier phases, and a solid shared foundation has been built for the project. It is great to continue together into the next phase, says Erica Roselius, Head of Rail Design at Ramboll.
