The new forest and nature information system was taken into production use in January 2023. Bitcomp Oy (now part of Sitowise Oy) acted as a partner in the project, being responsible for project management, design and implementation of the AWS architecture, user interface implementation and map section, among other things. The map solution of the system is Sitowise's Geo product
With the cloud-based solution, the Forest Centre gained better scalability and production reliability, as well as faster project implementation than traditional. The aim was also to seek cost benefits by automating data processing, for example, in the formation of forest resource patterns and the maintenance of pattern boundaries.
The Finnish Forest Centre produces and publishes forest and nature data on Finland's private forests based on laser scanning and field plots. The data cover a total area of approximately 14 million hectares. The information produced is updated by means of annual growth calculations and, for example, by receiving data from harvesters. Processed forest and nature data will be shared with users in accordance with the Open Data Directive, and it will also be available in Metsään.fi service. Almost all actors in the forest sector in Finland utilise the information produced by the Finnish Forest Centre.
