A cool climate brings benefits, but it's about more than weather

Finland's cold climate is often one of the first advantages mentioned in discussions about data centers. It is indeed a significant benefit, as cooling servers is one of the largest operational challenges for data center facilities.

Cool weather conditions can reduce the energy required for cooling and improve overall energy efficiency.

However, climate alone is not enough to attract investments. The key question is how well the energy infrastructure, electricity grid, and broader society can support operations over the long term.

Data centers are also increasingly evaluated based on the value they create for the surrounding community. Waste heat recovery is an excellent example of this. In addition to providing digital infrastructure, a data center can help heat homes and reduce emissions from local energy production.

Finland's extensive district heating network provides exceptional opportunities for utilizing waste heat compared to many other countries.

- Data centers should not be viewed solely as energy consumers. They can also play a significant role in the energy system if the waste heat they generate can be efficiently utilized in district heating networks or industrial applications, Niiranen explains.
