Sitowise has signed an MEP (Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing) design agreement with SRV, which will act as the construction contractor for the implementation phase of CSC – IT Center for Science Ltd's new LUMI AI Factory data centre project in Kajaani.

Sitowise's building technology design experts support CSC in implementing a technically demanding data center environment.

The development phase of the LUMI AI Factory data center began in September 2025, during which the project's technical solutions, as well as implementation and project plans, were prepared. At the start of the implementation phase, preparatory work began immediately, and the construction work started in January 2026. Operations are expected to start in spring 2027.

The new data center will be built in the Renforsin Ranta area of Kajaani, where the liquid-cooled LUMI supercomputer is already located, which CSC operates in partnership with the 11-country LUMI consortium. The new complex will be located in the area's old paper mill hall, and CLT solid wood will be used for the structural elements of the data center.

- It's great to be involved in implementing the next-generation data center solution together with CSC. The technical requirements of the project are at a very high level, and Sitowise's task is to ensure that the facilities and systems support the demanding technology of the LUMI AI Factory, says Kasper Kokkonen, Project Director at Sitowise.

LUMI AI Factory is part of the European Union's 19 artificial intelligence factories. AI factories provide researchers and companies with world-class computing power, high-quality datasets and the know-how to use them from a single place. In the initial phase, the LUMI AI Factory will utilise the current LUMI supercomputer, alongside which a new EuroHPC supercomputer, LUMI-AI, and an experimental quantum computing platform, LUMI-IQ, will be built.

The AI factory is hosted by a consortium that includes Finland, Norway, Poland, Denmark, the Czech Republic and Estonia. In Finland, Aalto University, AI Finland and the University of Helsinki are also involved in the cooperation. Additionally, four antenna countries, Belgium, Iceland, Latvia, and Switzerland, are connected to the LUMI AI Factory. CSC is responsible for coordinating the project.
